Owning a vehicle in a northern winter
Winter tires, cold starts, charging in the cold and an emergency kit: sourced, practical winter ownership advice for northern Alberta.

Winter is the toughest test any vehicle faces up here. These are the basics, each with a source.
The essentials
- Tires. Alberta doesn't require winter tires, but the province recommends four winter or all-weather tires with the mountain/snowflake symbol (Government of Alberta). Transport Canada notes that tires start to lose traction below 7°C (Transport Canada).
- Battery. Have it tested before the cold sets in, as CAA recommends (CAA Atlantic).
- Visibility. Clear snow from the hood, roof, windows and lights before you drive. Transport Canada notes some provinces fine drivers who don't.
- Kit. Plan ahead and carry tools and supplies. Keep your phone charged and a charging cable in the vehicle (Transport Canada).
- Electrified vehicles. Warm the cabin while plugged in, use the heated seats, and park indoors when you can (CAA).
